A gift idea for the fashion-loving teen

When I was 12 - 14 my favourite thing to do, other than work on my Harry Potter rip off featuring all-African students, was write bad, tiny poems or sketch. Now I've never been an artist or good with drawing but there were pages upon pages filled with my fashion sketches. I drew clothes and left some pieces of paper lying around, much to my mother's annoyance. It wasn't that I was creating a mess that bothered her, it was that I didn't do anything with the end results other than fill flip file pages.

But even as that teen with a love for fashion and stories, I couldn't have been able to imagine this gift idea for myself. There wasn't Rookie and I wasn't even on the internet -- the was just Free For All and double-page posters of, like, Chad Murray [THird name].

In 2018, I was featured in a street style coffee table type book. I'm in a book! Talking about style. Plus book, compiled and edited by writer, fat acceptance advocate, podcaster, plus designer and overall bbz, Bethany Rutter, is a book filled with outfit photos of over 100 fat babes from around the world! She went one better and got plus size goddess Gabi Gregg to be on the cover and included a foreword from another plus size style icon, Nicolette Mason. It's lit!
"If the world of fashion is still new and scary and feels unapproachable, please let this book act as the starting point -- and find us, join us, and be your glorious, fat, fashionable self." - Nicolette Mason

The only plus size style moment I can remember from my childhood, especially around the time when I was a teen sketching fashion -- aside from my gorgeous mother -- was Queen Latifah in Bringing Down The House in that double denim. Shorts! I can't imagine what it would have been like to have pages upon pages of looks and wisdom from fat women who loved clothes and style.

Of course, the fashion-loving teens of today have a few more options what with The Gram, the internet and more. But it's still so hard to bring positive visibility to stylish fat people. If your teen isn't fat, they probably wouldn't even think of plus size fashion style icons. But Bethany Rutter has done it for them! There are different styles in the book to suit all tastes.

"I wanted to make something permanent. I wanted to put all this on paper, to create a beautiful artefact that records the amazing work so many of us are doing." - Bethany Rutter

So if you have a teen who loves fashion in your life, consider getting them this book! They don't have to be plus size -- even though I think it will be just that more powerful if they are. But we need to normalise fat bodies and seeing fat people. This isn't something your favourite teen who loves fashion would find on the pages of mainstream fashion magazines or magazines aimed at teenagers. It's also a book so it will last longer.
